Under the Hood and IVAW have joined forces with the Civilian Soldier Alliance to expand Operation Recovery efforts in Killeen!

Founded in 2007, the Civilian Soldier Alliance is an organization of civilians working with veterans and active-duty service-members to build a GI resistance movement towards a just foreign policy. They work with and support service-members and veterans to withdraw military support from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting resistance within the military that empowers
service members to have a voice and develop as leaders organizing for change.

We are very excited about this new partnership. Read more about how Civilian Soldier Alliance is digging into the Operation Recovery Campaign in Killeen.

Thanks to Malachi Muncy, UTH’s intern extraordinaire, Under the Hood now has a new coffee bar with UTH logo. Now when you visit Under the Hood, you’ll be greeted with a cup of organic fair trade coffee when you walk in the door. Please stop by and enjoy a cup with us.

Join us this Friday, August 19^th at 5604 Manor (Austin) for a screening of the documentary “ Grounds for Resistance.”

A $5 suggested donation at the door will benefit Under the Hood.

Time: 7 – 9 p.m.

This documentary tells the story of the Coffee Strong coffee house located outside the
Fort Lewis, Washington army base. Aaron Hughes, an organizer with Iraq Veterans Against the War will be on hand to answer questions and speak about IVAW’s Operation Recovery program. Staff and
volunteers from Under the Hood will also be available to answer questions about their work.

Soldier and Veteran Art Showcase

Under the Hood will be hosting a Soldier and Veteran’s Art Showcase, where soldiers can display artwork and see what other art is being done by soldiers and veterans in the community. Interested in
submitting artwork? More details to be announced soon.

Join us for Hoodstock III on Sunday, October 2nd at Jovita’s! (Austin)

Our annual Hoodstock show will feature local artists and musicians and all proceeds will benefit Under the Hood Cafe & Outreach Center. We are still recruiting local artists to perform at this year’s event. IRAQ VETERANS AGAINST THE WAR CONVENTION KICK-OFF
Friday, July 9, 7pm, 5604 Manor Road

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is holding its 2010 national
convention July 9-11 in Austin, and supporters of IVAW will have a chance
for informal discussion and socializing with the group’s members. Tickets
for the event, which will include a buffet catered by Mamas of Color
Rising, will be $15 at the door. In addition to an awards presentation,
the evening will feature a talk by Antonia Juhasz, director of the Chevron
Program at Global Exchange and author The Tyranny of Oil: the World’s Most
Powerful Industry, and What We Must Do To Stop It. Juhasz is a member of
the advisory board of IVAW. The panels and workshops for the IVAW
convention will be on Saturday, July 10, at Huston-Tillotson University,
900 Chicon St. Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is a national
membership organization of veterans and active duty troops who have served in the “Global War on Terror” since September 11, 2001. Founded in 2004 by nine Iraq veterans, IVAW is now made up of 65 chapters comprised of close to 2,000 members, including chapters on military bases. IVAW is building a national GI and veterans’ resistance movement to 1) end the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, 2) attain quality health care and other benefits for returning troops, and 3) win reparations to rebuild a sovereign Iraq and Afghanistan. Detroit: U.S. Social Forum; USLAW presents workshops

Most of you know about the U.S. Social Forum this year. Many people from San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and other Texas cities are going. Some are presenting workshops. U.S. Labor Against the War is sponsoring 2 workshops: “Building solidarity with working people and unions in Iraq and other U.S. war zones” (Thurs., 6/24, 1 – 3 pm) and “Talking to workers and unions about war, military spending and U.S. foreign policy” (Friday, 6/25, 10 am – 12 noon).

Here’s a small excerpt from the USSF’s statement of beliefs:

“Believe that there is a strategic need to unite the struggles of oppressed communities and peoples within the United States (particularly Black, Latino, Asian/ Pacific-Islander and Indigenous communities) to the struggles of oppressed nations in the Third World.

Believe the USSF should place the highest priority on groups that are actually doing grassroots organizing with working class people of color, who are training organizers, building long-term structures of resistance, and who can work well with other groups, seeing their participation in USSF as building the whole, not just their part of it. . . .”

“In the great tradition of student protest, we will come together on Jan. 28 on Texas State’s campus to speak out against the criminal military actions of the United States government. With the recent escalation of the war in Afghanistan, the expansion into Pakistan and Yemen, and the continued occupation of Iraq, it is time to hold our leaders accountable. This day marks an opportunity to come together to discuss, to network, and to celebrate peace and resistance. As students, teachers, peace veterans, and musicians, we will make our voices heard against war. Not in our name!”
